When I increased the distance to 70 feet with one wall in between, it then averaged 209Mbps; again, about the same as similar routers. However, when used as a system with two or three nodes, it was clearly faster than the Google Wi-Fi and the Eero, though still far behind the Netgear Orbi. To test MU-MIMO performance, we use three identical Acer Aspire E15 laptops equipped with Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 wireless 802.11ac network adapters as clients. On the close-proximity test, the Dual-Band Velop router's score of 138Mbps was faster than the TP-Link Deco M5 , but not the Asus Lyra or the Linksys Tri-Band Velop ... For that reason, mesh networks are used commercially on college campuses and industrial complexes. The Velop is essentially a home version of that technology, and is expandable up to ten units. Those nightmares — dead spots, low speeds, flaky connectivity and constant switching between multiple hotspots — had persisted over multiple iterations of routers, extenders, repeaters, oversize antennas and more. Joining this are four Gigabit Ethernet ports for wired devices, which is fairly standard fare for any router.

Guest Access – In this menu, you can enable/disable Guess access, change the guest network name, and change the guest network password. Guests using guest access will be able to connect to the Internet, but will not have access to any resources (shared folders, printers, etc.) on the home network. To provide this bandwidth, each Velop has six internal antennas, four of which are used for the two 5GHz wireless bands. Inside each Velop station, there is also a Bluetooth 4.0 chip, for pairing the stations together. Each Deco S4 unit has two Ethernet ports, so you can connect them together with wires, or hardwire a desktop PC directly to a Deco unit. Even one device with a poor connection can bring the quality of the entire network down.

The BeaconHD is a wireless-only extender like Eero’s Beacons, however, so you’ll need another solution if you want a mesh node with an Ethernet port. The BeaconHD improved the Wi-Fi signal to the rest of the house, but as our tests show below, other mesh kits performed a bit better. The RT-AX86U is about $50 less than the RT-AX88U, but it doesn't match the throughput speed or range of our upgrade pick. It shares many features with the RT-AX88U, including the ability to customize Wi-Fi radio settings, AiMesh compatibility, and it includes updated security and advanced parental controls for the life of the router.
The Linksys Velop MX5300 is a tri-band router, giving you one 2.4GHz network and two 5GHz networks . The router presents all three networks under the same name, pushing connecting devices to the best one based on features, range and performance. This is common and makes managing devices easier, as they should only connect to the best network for them.

Both scores are significantly lower than what we saw with the Asus Lyra , the TP-Link Deco M5 , and the Tri-Band Velop nodes. On the 30-foot test, the Velop node 1 scored 97Mbps, beating the TP-Link Deco M5 (48.3Mbps), but not the Asus Lyra . The Dual-Band Velop node 2 scored 57Mbps, making it the slowest of the bunch at that location.
Still, it was a bit disappointing that the Velop wasn't able to outright outperform the Wi-Fi 5 systems we've mapped out. Its coverage looks to be right on par with what you'll get from systems like Nest Wifi, Eero and the dual-band, Wi-Fi 5 version of Netgear Orbi -- all of which cost less than half as much as the Velop MX10. The Linksys Velop router lagged behind other Wi-Fi 6 routers in our lab-based top speed tests -- and it finished behind the Wi-Fi 5 Nest Wifi router, too. Each offer backhaul bands with theoretical top speeds of up to4,800Mbps.
