Linksys WHW03 Velop Whole Home Mesh Wi-fi System 3 Pack

For now, then, this is less a mesh system than a single Wi-Fi 6 router with 12 wireless streams for clients. Although these normally take place in the middle of the night, they run as soon as the system is first setup, adding another five or ten minutes to the initial process. I roughly timed that it took around five minutes to set up each node, which may not sound like much but when you have three of them, it soon adds up. Wi-Fi systems come in all shapes and sizes, from Google Wifi's smallish, puck-shaped nodes to the lumbering cylindrical towers of the Netgear Orbi. The Velop 3-Pack consists of three identical, sleeking-looking glossy-white tapered mini towers that stand 7.28 inches tall and measure 3.07 by 3.07 inches at the base and 2.6 by 2.6 inches at the top.

We wanted to test an inexpensive mesh kit like the TP-Link Deco S4 and compare it with the other mesh networks here. While it placed near the bottom on our throughput tests, it was still faster than the Eero Pro + 2 Beacons and the Archer A7 standalone router we used for comparison at the same distances. The Deco S4 also showed excellent performance on the web browsing latency tests, remaining competitive with much more expensive kits like the AmpliFi Alien, Gryphon AX, and Eero 6. That rock steady connectivity on a busy network prompted us to name the Deco S4 our budget pick.

Wi-Fi systems reach further than ever at CES 2017

As per the previous reviews, their app is not the best one out there, that's for sure, and it was quite painful to set up the mesh, but it was really worth it in the end. I live in a two floors standard UK house and I always struggled with the connection. My VM router is placed on the ground floor, in the first room - living room. I bought this as I had ultra high speed broadband installed at 400 mbps. Can’t see the point in getting a WiFi 6.0 Mesh device since I’m sure three of these will cover even a mansion with very fast WiFi (and cost less than some of the 6.0 systems cost for just two nodes!). I wish I could replace the rubbish virgin router altogether but it seems to work reasonably well just passing the internet passively to one of my nodes.

Finally, I have the last node in my office where my Mac Pro has a wired connection to one ethernet port on the node and I use the free ethernet port to test various devices. If ever I need to connect a wired device to my network, I can go to whichever node is most convenient at that time. Velop doesn’t support disabling its NAT router and running all nodes as access points. So if you’re happy with your current router’s features and are just looking to improve your Wi-Fi, Velop can do it, but will separate devices connected to it from devices connected to your router. The Deco W2400 is a Walmart exclusive, but we wanted to test it because it is one of the least expensive mesh-network kits on the market, with a price less than $100. It was the slowest performer on our throughput tests, but it surprised us with upper middle-of-the-pack latency results.

Ahead of the curve, for gigabit internet

It can be hard to buy a great router without testing them side by side because the connection speed classes stamped on the box don’t actually mean much. These classes come in the form of initially impenetrable alphanumeric jumbles such as “AX6600” or “AC1750.” In this case, “1750” stands for 1.75 gigabits per second. They refer to theoretical maximum ceilings defined in the specifications of wireless protocols, but have little to do with the speeds you’ll get in the real world. Streams are very important in the WI-Fi 6 world, as with Wi-Fi 6 devices it means that each one can either get its own dedicated bandwidth or get better performance by using multiple streams at once. Wi-Fi 5 devices don’t have the same sharing benefits, although they should still get faster throughputs. At close range, the Linksys Velop MX5300 Whole Home Mesh WiFi 6 System is fast.

If your house is wired for Ethernet, you don’t need a mesh-networking kit. You can run Ethernet cable to inexpensive wireless access points and outperform the best mesh-network kits we cover here, at a much lower cost. Your wired connection will have both a higher throughput and lower latency, or the time you’re sitting waiting for the website, game server, or streaming service to respond and send data back. Another option is to connect multiple routers you have lying around with Ethernet, but that’s a story for another guide. Mesh shines when you don’t have wires, don’t want wires, and have lots of trouble spots with poor or no coverage.

Then I followed the instructions on the phone app with all three of the nodes in the same room and it was as easy as anything. It’s obvious Velop didn’t do very well at all in this test, turning in the lowest performance in all tests except Kitchen Reconnect, where it ever-so-slightly edged out Ubiquiti Amplifi, and Office, where it beat eero and Google Wifi. You can manually block an individual client from Internet access, or you can block specific sites. Linksys mentioned parental control scheduling, but I didn’t find that feature in the Linksys app.

Your access to this site was blocked by Wordfence, a security provider, who protects sites from malicious activity. This Wi-Fi 5 system is now five years old and has been superseded by the Atlas Pro 6. However, it delivers plenty of features and broad Wi-Fi coverage and this represents the lowest price we've ever seen on the system.

Load-balancing band steering becomes even more important with tri-band routers—that extra radio won’t do you any good if none of your devices are connected to it. The Google Nest Wifi is available as a pack of two or a pack of three. The Nest Wifi router is a dedicated Wi-Fi 5 base unit with two Ethernet ports, and the wireless-only Nest Wifi access points have Google Assistant functionality and a smart speaker built in. In our testing, the Nest Wifi kit excelled at the single-client throughput tests but lagged the Eero Pro + 2 Beacons when all six laptops were using the network at the same time. While the Nest Wifi is easy to set up if you use Google’s services often, there are privacy concerns with Google’s Assistant technology, which extend to the websites and services you visit using the Nest Wifi.

After testing top speeds at our lab and real-world speeds in my house, we take each mesh router we review to the 5,800-sq.-ft. To do so, we set the router and its satellite up on the main floor and then use NetSpot software to log the signal strength from dozens of points across the two-story home. Signal strength isn't the same thing as speed, mind you -- but the stronger your signal is, the faster you'll be able to connect. The Linksys Velop MX5300 Whole Home Mesh WiFi 6 System is a somewhat strange product, in that it currently isn’t a mesh system, with only a single router. The MX10600 is a far better product, able to push a signal to the top of my house, although it’s comparatively expensive, so remains harder to recommend until there’s a price drop. The setup process is easy as long as you have smart phone, and like many other mesh routers, there are no alternative set up options like a web interface.

The Linksys Velop MX10 saw an average download speed of 243Mbps throughout my entire house, where my internet plan caps speeds at 300Mbps. The only router I've tested that beats that average is the equally expensive Netgear Orbi 6. Meanwhile, the Nest Wifi router hit a top speed of 612Mbps at close range.

You need it to already be quite fast there actually in order for the mesh not to lose a bit of speed (the second node can’t be any faster than your phone is with only the first node switched on at the point you site the node). If for example my son and three of his friends were all in same room playing on the PC with their mobiles in their pockets some of them were connected to 2.4ghz in a more distant node and others to the 5 of the closest. I can see that if I bought another three I could probably get close to my actual maximum speed everywhere. But your house will almost certainly be fine with three and I am not in any rush to get more. I was happy to see Linksys break out of the DWS 3-pack pack by including a second 5 GHz radio in Velop. Properly used, a third radio can provide more options for separating backhaul and client traffic and improving overall system performance.

In our tests, both performed in the middle of the pack but didn’t distinguish themselves over the TP-Link Archer AX50 or AX20. This expanded wireless standard, promoted during recent CES trade shows, takes advantage of deregulated 6 GHz radio frequencies. Laptops and phones that are 6 GHz compatible are still rare, but we think the new bands will be useful for wireless backhaul between a router and satellites (such as in a mesh-networking kit). So far, Asus has released the ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 gaming router, but others, including the TP-Link Archer AX75, Archer AX96, AXE200 Omni, and Archer AX206, will follow.

I tapped Add a Node and plugged the second node into an outlet in my living room, about 30 feet from the first node. I followed the same routine as above, then added the final node , and the installation was complete. After each node was added, the app informed me that the placement was good, and all three nodes showed solid blue LEDs, indicating a good connection.
